7.FORT AGUADA

Overlooking the vast expanse of ‘seeming to be endless’ blue waters in front of it, Fort Aguada is one of the most popular tourist destinations of Goa. It receives a lot of tourist traffic all around the year. Reasons are that it’s excellent for sightseeing and also that it stands as a testimony to the glory of Portuguese empire.

A drive from Panaji (the capital of Goa) can take you to Fort Aguada. The way will be having a lot of narrow roads and distance to be covered from Panaji till here will be around 14-15 kms. Drive time should not be more than 45 minutes ideally. There’s another trek way to reach the fort which will be requiring you to take a 2 km long walk through a steep slope.

8.Pandava Caves and Arvalem Waterfall: Witness the Beauty of Nature

About 9 kms to the south of Bicholim town in North Goa is located the 6th century Pandava cave complex and Arvalem waterfalls. The cave complex is divided into 5 compartments and the ‘linga’ enshrined in the middle compartment is held in great reverence by devotees here.

Another attraction close to the Pandava or Arvalem caves is the Arvalem waterfalls. The water cascading down from a height of 50 mts makes for an awesome view, and there is a park nearby from where you can view the waterfall as well as the lake at the bottom.

9.BASILICA OF BOM JESUS

One of the most famous churches of Goa, the Basilica of Bom Jesus is a finest example of Baroque architecture. Though partially in ruins, it is highly revered by Christians from all over the country and world. Dedicated to Jesus, it is aptly named as Bom Jesus which means ‘good Jesus’ or ‘infant Jesus’.


Located at Old Goa, at a distance of 10km east of Panaji, its foundation stone was laid on 24 November 1594. It houses beautiful paintings depicting scenes from the life of St. Francis Xavier.

Few interesting facts:

  • It is the only church in Old Goa, which is not plastered on the outside.
  • It is a World Heritage Monument.
  • It holds the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier.

10.SHANTA DURGA TEMPLE

Shri Shantadurga Temple is situated at the foothill of Kavalem village in Ponda Taluka, Goa. A small laterite mud shrine was built and the deity was installed here. The mud-shrine was converted into a beautiful temple whose foundation stone was laid in 1730 and the temple was completed in 1738 and renovated in 1966

The temple is dedicated to Shantadurga, the goddess who mediates between Vishnu and Shiva. The deity is also called ‘Santeri’ colloquially. Local legends tell of a battle between Shiva and Vishnu. The battle was so fierce that the god Brahma prayed to Goddess Parvati to intervene, which she did in the form of Shantadurga. Shantadurga placed Vishnu on her right hand and Shiva on her left hand and settled the fight.

Shantadurga is shown as holding two serpents, one in each hand, representing Vishnu and Shiva

The temple has a huge tank, a Deepastambha and agrashalas (guest houses).
